Woodland creation and mature woodland management in Oxfordshire

This collaborative project is working with a parish conservation group to create and manage natural habitats on land owned by an Oxfordshire-based charity. The mix of project activities includes tree planting and management, pollinator-friendly meadow creation, management of an SSSI woodland to improve the condition of notified biological interests, and establishment of a small, heritage variety, community orchard.

A group of local volunteers worked hard in early March 2023 to plant small, dense clusters of wet woodland species, such as common alder, birch and goat willow. Planting was focused in wet areas where existing young trees have struggled to survive or grow. We’re hoping the newly planted species will cope more successfully with the conditions, and begin to influence soil and above ground ecology.

Enhancement and long term management of native, broadleaf woodland will help restore and enhance local biodiversity, contribute to climate change mitigation and provide local access to wild, green spaces, leading to health and wellbeing benefits. Engagement and education of the local community will be supported through extensive use of signage and inclusion of volunteers in all aspects of management.
